Does a Home Warranty Cover Refrigerator Repairs?
How home warranties usually treat refrigerator breakdowns, ice makers, extra fridges and spoiled food, plus a checklist for reading the contract.
Short answer: most appliance plans and combo plans include the kitchen refrigerator. Coverage usually pays when a part that keeps it cold breaks, like the compressor, fan motors, thermostat or defrost system. Ice makers, extra fridges and spoiled food are often left out.
What is often limited or excluded
- Built-in ice makers and water dispensers, which some plans cover only with an add-on
- A second refrigerator or garage freezer, often an optional extra
- Shelves, drawers, handles, lights and other cosmetic parts
- Food spoilage, which some plans cover only up to a small set amount and many do not cover at all
- Refrigerant or sealed-system repairs that cost more than the plan's limit
- Built-in or high-end models subject to separate caps
Before you file a claim
First check the power, the settings, the door seals and the area around the coils. A technician visit usually costs a service fee, even when the fix is simple. Then follow how to file a home warranty claim.
Refrigerator contract checklist
- Is my primary refrigerator in the base plan or an appliance tier?
- Are ice makers and dispensers included?
- Can I add a second refrigerator or freezer, and at what cost?
- Is there any food spoilage coverage, and what are its limits?
- What is the dollar cap, and how is replacement value decided?
