How Long Do Home Appliances Last? A Practical Lifespan Guide
Typical lifespans for refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers, furnaces and more, plus tips to help each one last longer.
Every appliance has a limited life. Knowing roughly where yours stand helps you budget and decide whether coverage makes sense.
Typical ranges
These are general ranges; brand, use and maintenance all make a difference.
- Refrigerator: about 10 to 15 years
- Dishwasher: about 8 to 12 years
- Clothes washer: about 10 to 14 years
- Clothes dryer: about 10 to 15 years
- Range or oven: about 13 to 18 years
- Tank water heater: about 8 to 12 years
- Furnace: about 15 to 20 years or more
- Central air conditioner: about 12 to 17 years
How to find an appliance's age
Look for the serial number sticker, often inside the door or on the back. Many manufacturers encode the year in the serial number; the manufacturer's website or support line can decode it.
Ways to extend appliance life
- Clean refrigerator condenser coils once or twice a year.
- Run the dishwasher's cleaning cycle and clean its filter.
- Leave the washer door open to dry between loads.
- Clean the dryer lint screen every time and the vent at least yearly.
- Change HVAC filters on schedule.
When to repair vs. replace
A common rule of thumb: if a repair costs more than half the price of a new unit and the appliance is near the end of its range, replacement may be smarter. ENERGY STAR ratings can help you choose an efficient replacement.
